overview

Oregon Agricultural Trust (OAT) partners with farmers and ranchers to protect Oregon’s agricultural lands. This land is inextricably linked to the livelihood of the families that work it, so when OAT asked us to help them develop their brand and visual identity, we knew the project demanded a solution that landowners would interpret as honest and dependable.

In addition to resonating with farmers and ranchers, the brand needed to gain traction among OAT’s peer organizations, its growing donor base, and the many urbanites who wish to connect with this critical cause. Factoring in the viewpoints and preferences of these mixed audiences — which don’t always overlap — added an additional layer of complexity.

strategy

We dug into the research, reading anything we could find that related to the project. Transcripts of interviews with farmers and ranchers, Capital Press articles, marketing materials from like-minded organizations, even the poetry of Wendell Berry. We also conducted interviews with key figures in the agricultural industry. Our ultimate goal was to understand and honor the hopes, fears, pains, and overall worldview of the noble men and women who steward steward Oregon agricultural land now and into the future.

logomark

Most people typically see farmland at street level from the seat of their car. But any farmer or rancher worth their salt can mentally visualize their land from an aerial perspective, so we created a logomark inspired by the shapes and patterns of agricultural land as seen from above. We want the ag community to view OAT the same way they view a tool in their belt: it’s dependable, true, and it gets the job done.

sowing the seeds

After developing the logo and supporting kit of parts, we helped OAT roll out their new brand across a variety of marketing materials including a digital newsletter framework, strategic plan, annual report, support for multiple fundraising campaigns, and a variety of fun swag items like bumper stickers, hats, tote bags, and even snot rags — an essential item for those working out in the field.

From providing us with a beautiful logo and brand, to brainstorming communications projects that are far more effective than we could have ever imagined, Rotator has our organization’s back. They are a small, nimble, and mighty team of visionaries, artists, and master communicators. We could not have been so successful building our organization from scratch during a pandemic without their smart and efficient work.

summary

From straightshooter talk to honest materials, the OAT brand is built to ring trustworthy and true. These are high stakes, and with multiple audiences whose priorities aren’t always in alignment, it’s critical for OAT to communicate their shared values both visually and verbally.
